The evidence of William Roy’s 1750 Great Map of the descendants of the local folk who “improved” the land at Fordoun makes Foroun an 84 AD Roman Marching Camp of 46 hectares, and even perhaps Carmount is one too (28 hectares) and what with the recent discovery – search highway-through-history.pdf – of an undefended Roman Camp by the River Dee, and names of localities on the slopes of our Knock Hill (to the Romans THE ” Mons Graupius” – it means “Hump Hill”) – this makes the slopes of Knock Hill the most likely site for their victory at the Battle of Mons Graupius in 84 AD.
We should not delude ourselves – if the Romans had not been “distracted” for over 25 years by their decision to destroy the Dacians (inhabitants of what is now Romania, then with immeasureable riches – which the Romans took as plunder) – the Romans, the superpower of the time, would have easily conquered our lands.
